**Re-Issue Song of the Week

Tune in next Tuesday, March 16th, for a special South By Southwest New Release Show.  New music from new bands; some of which don’t have an album out yet…but I’ve got their music.  It all kicks off at 10:00 AM followed by two hours of the Music You Might Otherwise Miss with many SXSW artists there too.  Tune in to 91.5 FM, in the Boston Area, or wmfo.org, everywhere else.

The Music You Might Otherwise Miss 3-2-10

March 4th, 2010

Well the year just keeps rolling on. We are already through February and busting our way into the first show of March. Come on in and check out what’s new for this week.

I started the show with Operator Please. They are a five-piece out of Queensland, Australia and their background story is a good one. These kids all went to the same high school but didn’t really know each other. They met because of a common dislike for the school’s annual “Battle Of The Bands” contest that was always won by the popular kids. Well, these malcontents ended up finding this common ground over lunch period and decided to do something about it. Remember, these kids didn’t know each other prior but the common goal was the glue. They went through a series a band name adjustments. They started with Lego Head, then on to Rubix Cube but finally settled on Operator Please. The best part of the story…the won the band competition. True story. Since that storied beginning, Operator Please has records several EPs, their last being LOGIC, and I played the titled track.

I followed that with the latest from The Pipettes. They aren’t the same Pipettes that busted onto the music scene back in 2006. In fact, over the years the line-up has consistently changed. That always makes me wonder…who owns the name, Pipettes? How do you kick out a member? Do they have like a buy/sell agreement? All questions for another time…I’m sure. The new record EARTH VS. THE PIPETTES is due out later this year. This song, Our Love Was Saved By Spacemen is the selected single and technically it’s not due out until April but I’m sure it was leaked on purpose. I mean, they have a video for the bloody song already. The song seems overproduced. You will not hear it again on my show.

Changing musical direction, as I usually do at this point, with a selection from a singer/songwriter by the name of Holly Miranda. She started out in a band known as the Jealous Girlfriends and had some moderate success with that organization but she has struck out on her own in, I believe, 2001. She self-produced and recorded HIGH ABOVE THE CITY in 2004, which she sold at concerts. Good marketing strategy. It keeps more money in her pocket. Well, she signed with XL Records, which allowed her the freedom to put together a more layered and technically better sound on her new album THE MAGICIAN’S PRIVATE LIBRARY. The song I picked to play has kind of a whimsical feel to it, it’s called “Forest Green, Oh Forest Green.”

Next was “You Won’t Be With Me” from Tenlons Fort. The new album SHELTERS FUND comes out this week. These boys hail from Los Angeles; and to me they have a familiar sound. I don’t have a great deal of information on these guys but I do know that this is their second album and that they are starting a tour to promote the album, which includes a stop at SXSW. I am SO looking forward to going. I’ll have to see set up a spreadsheet to see who’s playing where to maximize my listening enjoyment. If you’ve never been, it’s a great music experience.

Let’s keep things moving here with a band known as We & Lisa. They are yet another pop band from Sweden, and no…there is no one in the band named Lisa. Here’s their story, which I lifted from their myspace page. “Singer Petter and Doc Ron met in the Swedish soccer team Doolittle BK. Petter played Doc Ron a few of his songs and the latter was so impressed that he instantly felt that the two of them just had to form a pop group, which they did. The team’s goalie, Ante, soon brought his guitar and the band We & Lisa was a reality. In May 2004 the guys released their first D.I.Y. E.P. C’mon C’mon.” The song I played, “Under My Protection,” appears on their new WINTER – EP.

Closing off that two-song set with the latest from a band called Big Scary. They are essentially a male/female duo from Melbourne, Australia. I found this over the weekend while cruising the Australian Music Web Ring. That absolutely pleasant song was “Falling Away” and it’s from an EP that was released just last Friday. It’s called AT THE MERCY OF THE ELEMENTS. This is the only song I had a chance to sample but I’m going back to try to find other material to check out the depth of their songwriting. Hey, it’s my job. I really liked that track.

My lineage subject was David Vandervelde. Now you might be wondering, “Who the heck is David Vangervelde and why did TK pick this guy for the lineage?” That’s a fair question and let me tell you, I think you should get to know this singer/songwriter. He IS a talent. He recorded his first album, with a band, at the age of 14. Over the years he has developed additional skills. He now is a multi instrumentalist/ singer songwriter/ recording engineer/ & producer. He plays drums, piano, guitars, bass and various analog synthesizers. He has more talent is his pinky finger than I have in entirety. His latest effort is the lead-off single from a yet-to-be named album; this is “Learn How To Hang,” which can be downloaded for free if you go to his label’s website, Secretly Canadian. That’s a good deal.

The lineage follow-up song was I Will Be Fine,” which is off his 2008 release, WAITING FOR THE SUNRISE.

I played some new music from Peter And The Wolf. The song I played was Golden Stars,” and it’s the title track from their second, full-length album. This Folk/Rock “Band” is a trio out of Liverpool, England. They met in 2002 when vocalist/guitarist Marc Sunderland and drummer Donna Dosanjh, who plays her kit standing, met at school. After playing the some gigs during open mic opportunities, they were joined by stand-up bassist Hugo Harrison. The song has a light pop feel to it.

“Western Hospitality” is the latest single from Club 8. They are another Swedish contributor to the show. They consist of vocalist Karolina Komstedt and composer/ multi-instrumentalist Johan Angergård. They debuted in 1995. You know, I almost made them the lineage today. I have a lovely track from them that I picked up on 2007…well, I digress. The new disc is called THE PEOPLE’S RECORD, but it’s not out yet. I should be in about three weeks, so when that happens…I’ll revisit them as the lineage. This track is quite a departure from their earlier material and it’s in a good way. Here’s the older song I mentioned. It’s called Whatever You Want.”

I have a couple of quick mentions that I included in the show. First is the latest from Nick Jaina. His new album, A BIRD IN THE OPERA HOUSE, is coming out on April 13th on Hush Records. This is his sixth effort from the prolific young fellow from Portland, Oregon. The track I played was “Sleep Child.”

Next is Butch Walker. He’s part of the neo-folk or Americana category. He reminds me a bit of Willie Nile. He put together a fine release entitled I LIKED IT BETTER WHEN YOU HAD NO HEART. I played the lead off track and it’s called Trash Day.”

Tune in every Tuesday from 10 AM to 1 PM (All times Eastern US) on wmfo.org. Also, don’t forget about the best way to kick off your weekend with the Uptown Blues Party. Three hours of up-tempo, blues based, kick ass music, Fridays, 4 to 7 PM on Simmons College Radio.

FYI, the text identified in BOLD are links to the videos to those songs.

Music You Might Otherwise Miss 2-16-10

February 22nd, 2010

www.myspace.com/seabird

As the year in music starts to hit full swing, the amount and variety has already started to increase despite the slow economy.  Let me fill you in on what I found this week.

I started with Moonlight Bride. They are a fantastic four-piece, unsigned band out of Chattanooga, Tennessee.  I don’t have a great deal of information on these boys other than they have self-released their latest effort, which is titled MYTHS.  I like what I’m hearing though.  Their single is “Young Guns” and it’s quite catchy.

I finished the opening set with the latest from the VV Brown.  Actually, if you listened to this show with some frequency, you’ve probably heard that song before.  I’ve been playing it since July of 2009.  Brown’s latest album, TRAVELING LIKE THE LIGHT, was released in the UK in 2008.  The single, Crying Blood,” which is what I played; I got my hot little hands on earlier this year.  But since it has been officially released, I thought I’d play it as part of my New Release Show.

Changing musical direction here with a new release from a band called Boo Hooray, which I happen to think, is a hilarious name.  It’s kind of like opposite names in a band.  Like Velvet Revolver or Concrete Blonde…something soft combined with something hard.  That was the advice Michael Stipe gave Johnette Napolitano when she was trying to come up with a name for her band.  So with Boo Hooray, they are opposite cheers.  Anywho, Boo Hooray used to be known as Electric Music, which is essentially the duo of Tom Doyle and Anth Brown, just released their third album, HAUNTED.  They have a nice touch on some mid-tempo music.  The selected single is “The Angels Are Closer,” which is very nice, but I happen to like “Everything Is Light And Dust And Alright.”

That was followed with Bluff from Daphne Willis.  It is the designated single from her new album WHAT TO SAY.  I actually played it about a month ago as part of the New Release Show but I like the track and I thought I’d feature it again.  Miss Daphne has an in-store appearance at the Barnes & Noble, in the Prudential Center, at Noon on March 6th.  Then later that night she has a paying gig at Café 939.  I’m planning on making the free show at the Pru.

Let’s keep things moving here with Canadian singer/songwriter Basia Bulat.  She received quite a bit of press with the release of her 2007 debut release, OH, MY DARLING.  Well, she has followed that fine CD up with HEART OF MY OWN.  These twelve tracks on her new album have some nicely crafted tunes but as usual…I didn’t have an affinity for the selected single, “Run.”  Instead, my ears perked up upon hearing track number seven, “If Only You.”  I think is showcases her vocal style and her assured writing.  What caught my attention is that the song is more upbeat than the others but it still is about sad subject matter.  Very clever.

Closing off that two-song set with new music from the lovely Allison Moorer.  Did you know she is Shelby Lynne’s little sister and that Allison is married to Steve Earle, who also produced this album, CROWS.  The track I chose to play was The Broken Girl.”  And per usual, the song I picked is not the selected single, which is the title track.  Don’t get me wrong.  “Crows” is a lovely song and Allison’s voice sweetly sings the lyrics; it’s just a bit down-tempo for my taste.  Hey, I’m an upbeat kind of guy, if you haven’t figured that already.

My lineage subject was Beach House. This sometimes melodically dark duo is from Baltimore, where I originally became familiar with their work.  I worked at WTMD, just outside the city proper for four years before coming to Boston.  With Victoria Legrand’s dreamy vocals and Alex Scally’s otherworldly arrangements, Beach House created a strong local following.  Their third, and latest, album is TEEN DREAM.  It also their official Bigger Label debut, as this CD is released on Sub Pop.  The sound follows a similar style as their previous work but what they tried to work on, with the help of their new label, was how it sounded.  The new effort was recorded in a converted church, which adds to their ethereal sound.  I played the track Used To Be.”

The follow-up tune for the lineage was Wedding Bell,” which came from the DEVOTION album.  It’s a great cool-down song for after my workout.  (The video is not an officially sanctioned piece. It appears to be a class project for a student but it does tell an interesting story to the tune of "Wedding Bell," so I linked to it)

Next is new music from the Mary Onettes.  The track I played was Century,” and it’s off the latest album, ISLANDS.  Clever name eh?  The MARY ONETTES, or if said quickly…the marionettes.  This pop quartet is from Sweden and was founded back in 2000.  They’ve released several EPs and this is their second, full-length album.  By the way, the selected single is Puzzles,” and it’s a good song.  But you know me; I just like to dive into the deeper tracks. (The video link for "Century" really isn’t a video. It’s just the album cover with the song playing. I included it because their myspace page didn’t include it in their player.)

“Don’t You Know You’re Beautiful” is the latest single from Sea Bird. This Cincinnati based rock and roll band model themselves after artists like Keane, Coldplay or James Blunt, depending on the mood of the song.  This track is from their second, full-length disc entitled ROCKS INTO RIVERS.  It’s as mainstream as I’m going to get.

I followed that up with the latest from The Go Find.  I actually featured this band and group on an earlier New Release Show.  The first show in January, I think…but I digress.  I mention this only because the album just officially came out, so I thought I might re-visit this track since it’s a pleasant mid-tempo jaunt; perfect for a Tuesday morning; when the show airs and you should listen to.  The track I reprised was, Everybody Knows It’s Gonna Happen Only Not Tonight,” which is also the album’s title. (I don’t where this video came from but it’s nice visuals)

Next up…is a strangely named band called Chew Lips.  They are a South London based electronic/pop trio.  The lead singer goes by a single name, TIGS, and she is supported by multi-instrumentalists; Will Anderson and James Watkins.  After looking into the band a little bit deeper, I discovered that the band’s name is from a character in Brendan Behan’s book BORSTAL BOY.  The song I played is called Seven and it’s from the new album UNICORN, which is not yet out here in the States.

Let me slip in one more from Phantogram.  Their new album is EYELID MOVIES.  They are a funky blend of electronics, sampling and female fronted pop.  I played “As Far As I Can See.

Join me live every Tuesday from 10 AM to 1 PM (all times Eastern US) at wmfo.org.  You get to hear my charming voice and get a feel of how the show is designed to sonically move from one song to another.  It’s good for you.  Trust me; I’m a professional.

Music You Might Otherwise Miss 1-26-10

January 28th, 2010

Happy New Year everyone and thanks for visiting my blog. Your patronage makes it work and makes it all worthwhile. Let’s jump in an see what’s out this latest week in January of 2010.

I started the show with Vitamin-D. They are a music group based in Brooklyn, NY. They are headed by Dennis Cronin, who plays trumpet and guitar. When I went to their website; their brightly colored, montage inspired homepage simply states “Trumpety Thought Pop.” That kind of covers it. Their brand new album is called BRIDGE and I played their first single, it’s called “Keeper.”

Finishing that opening set was the latest from the Shout Out Louds. If you are not familiar with this group, they are a five-piece, mixed-gendered collection that formed in Stockholm, Sweden. They are yet another fine example of Scandinavian indie pop. It is amazing to me that a country the size of Sweden produces some really good artists. For example: the Cardigans, The Concretes and Peter, Bjorn and John, just to name a quick few off the top of my head. The new disc from the Shout Out Louds is WORK, and the track I chose was Fall Hard.”

Changing musical direction here with a new release that was classified by I-Tunes as a Hip-Hop/Rap artist, but I believe he has crossover appeal. The artist is Rjd2, whose given name is Ramble John Krohn. He was born in Eugene, Oregon but he currently calls Philadelphia his home. He’s a producer, for the most part, but he’s released two, predominately instrumental Hip-Hop albums. His latest effort, COLOSSUS, doesn’t stray to far from his M.O., however he does get more vocal help. On the track I picked, “Games You Can Win,” it features Kenna, an Ethiopian born vocalist. If you can, check it out and see what you think.

I followed that up with “Wide-Eyed, Legless” from Laura Veirs. This sometimes quirky, Seattle based singer/songwriter, has now released seven albums over her career. I’ve been an admirer since I discovered her in 2005, with the release of her YEAR OF METEORS. If you get a chance, check out “Galaxies” and also the title track of her follow-up disc, SALTBREAKERS. It’s good stuff. Her latest effort is JULY FLAME.

Let’s keep things moving here with the indie-pop sounds of Oberhofer, which is Brad Oberhofer. He’s pretty new so I don’t have a great deal of information. He has three guys supporting him in his band, they currently make Brooklyn their home and they are unsigned. This song I have for you today is from their self-titled EP, the track is titled “Away FRM U.”

Closing off that two-song set with a deeper track from the latest effort by the Cold War Kids, which is a four-song EP, BEHAVE YOURSELF. I am joking, of course, about the deeper cut, I mean, how deep can you go on a four-song EP? Anywho…I really wasn’t taken by the selected single, “Audience,” I found it too noisy. I was drawn to the more melodic feel of “Coffee Spoon.” I am sure I’ll get grief for that comment but hey…music IS subjective and you listen to the show, and review the blog, because you like my taste in music. At least that’s what I hope anyway.

My lineage subject was Motion City Soundtrack. These guys are the perfect subject matter because where they were back in 2003 is markedly different than this 2010 release. Their latest CD, MY DINOSAUR LIFE, feels over-produced, and designed for the Mass-Market. Not that there is anything wrong with that. These boys got a label deal from Sony/BMI and they are trying to punch their ticket to the big-time; and I wish them well. But if you can check out a track from their debut disc, which is where part two of the feature kicked in. Be aware, there are several versions of this new album; I believe it’s three. Two have explicit lyrics and one’s been cleansed. These guys like to swear and are big fans of the F-Bomb. In fact, I had to manually edit the second song of this feature. I don’t need any FCC fines. The follow-up song was The Future Freaks My Out,” which is off their debut, full-length album I AM THE MOVIE.  Oops, I almost forgot to tell you which song I selected for the show.  I played "Stand Too Close."

Next is new music from Spoon. I played “Got Nuffin,” and it’s off the latest album, TRANSFERENCE but it originally appeared as the title track on an EP released last year. It still is the best track I hate to say.

“Heard You Got A Thing For Me” is the latest single from The Cocktail Slippers. I have to say latest because the song came out in April of 2009…but hey, if you haven’t heard it before; it’s new to you. I ran into this Norwegian, all-girl band by accident over the weekend and I liked what I heard so I thought I’d share it with you. This is from the album SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY MASSACRE.

I followed The Cocktail Slippers with the latest from Surfer Blood. They are a quintet out of South Florida; West Palm Beach, to be more precise. This part of the US coastline is not famous for its big waves but this five-piece chose the name Surfer Blood, for their moniker. They combine rock; surf music and pop to concoct a charming cool sound. They’ve released a couple of singles but this is from their first album, which is called ASTRO COAST. I chose to play Floating Vibes.”

Next up is The Soft Pack, they are a band out of San Diego, California and they have an album coming out February 2nd. Actually, it’s more of an EP than an album but whatever you call it, they titled it THE SOFT PACK 12” - EP and I played Answer To Yourself.”

Let me slip in one more from the The Ruby Suns. From their new album FIGHT SOFTLY, this is “Cranberry.” It’s a catchy little tune and probably favored my by the youngsters.

I will be away next week so tune back in on February 9th for the next installment of the Music You Might Otherwise Miss on 91.5 FM or online at wmfo.org. (10 AM to 1 PM) I will be on this Friday, January 29th, for the official start of the weekend with the Uptown Blues Party on Simmons College Radio. 4:00 to 7:00 PM, all times Eastern US. It’s always better live.

Songs in BOLD mean links to videos of that song, which can be hard to accomplish since much of this material is so new.
