Music You Might Otherwise Miss 2-10-15

We have been getting hammered here in the Boston area with a sh!tload of snow. Three Mondays in a row now. The T (Boston’s subway system) was shut down and I had to Uber it to and from the station. I already missed one Tuesday due to weather and I’m away next week; I just couldn’t miss this Tuesday’s show. So let me tell you how it went down.

I began my radio show with Greg Chiapello. Greg is a singer/songwriter out of Brisbane, Australia. He was in a couple other bands from the area before stepping out on his own. This guy also has some acting chops with appearances in both film and television. He is going out on tour and he will be supporting the amazing Megan Washington; and he’s just released this clever single…Hot Coffee.”

Then came the latest from Panic Is Perfect. I first featured them on last week’s show. They are an Indie Rock Alt. quintet based in San Francisco; they are fronted by Jeremy Belzer and Mike Hoffman. As promised…I wanted to play another track from their yet to be released EP: BEHIND YOUR EYELIDS. This was the track I originally found from them. Bobby Black is its title.

Changing musical direction with this artist…her name is Tica Douglas. She is a solo artist that now makes her base of operations in Brooklyn. Shortly after her arrival in the Big Apple she released her debut album, SUMMER VALENTINE, to rave reviews from the Brooklyn-based, Hipster Reviewer crowd. Lavishing comparatives like “Sharon Von Etten meets the Cranberries” or “Joni Mitchell having listened to a lot of Sigur Ros.” I chanced upon her latest single, I Didn’t,” over this weekend. I didn’t get it right away…but something made me want to listen to it again…and I’m glad I did. A full-length album, JOEY, is set for release later this year. (After listening to it on air…I like it even more. She is outrageously good)

I followed that up with a tune from Charlie Cunningham. Charlie Cunningham is a lush singer/songwriter from Bedforshire; in the U.K. He currently lives in Oxford. He has a new EP, BREATHER, set for release on March 9th. The tune I sampled for airplay, Own Speed,” is the pre-release single…and it’s lovely.

Next up is something new from a band called Two Cartoons. I featured their first single on last week’s show. So…just as a refresher…they are duo and they hail from London. I found them about two weeks ago and when I went to do research for my broadcast I often visit the band’s Facebook and SoundCloud page. So when I originally went to Two Cartoons Soundcloud page I discovered they have just released another single. So…that’s how we get here…with the new track. This one is Lost Boys Club.”

I then featured new music from a band called Zerbin. Zerbin is a four-piece, Indie Pop band out of Edmonton and Victoria, Canada. I was checking out their Facebook page and I got a kick out of their description…so I wanted to share it with you. It is “Zerbin is a Canadian band that makes and plays melodic symphonic prophetic alternative indie rock music.” They have a new album in the works. It is called DARLING and I aired the lead off single…Worlds On Fire.”

My lineage subject was Deb Talan and Steve Tannen, also known as The Weepies. They actually had their own separate singer/songwriter careers before they teamed up to become The Weepies. They met at one of Tannen’s shows in Cambridge and became admirers of each other’s music. That led to a partnership, both musically and romantically. I’ve been following and playing them for over ten years. Their latest addition to their discography is SIRENS and I have for you this feature the title track. I believe the album has a street date of April 28th.

Part two of the lineage was satisfied by the tune Happiness,” which The Weepies released back in 2003 on the album of the same name.

My re-issue release of the week was from Genesis. The album that has been re-released is DUKE. This release was significant for the band. It was the first LP the band put out sans Peter Gabriel. The new formation, a trio now, put Phil Collins right out front and center. And…BOY…did he make the most of it. The disc had some great tunes on it like Behind The Lines,” Misunderstanding,” and, the one I spun, Turn It On Again.

I followed the re-issue with a brand new tune from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Unknown Mortal Orchestra is an indie rock band made of an American and a Kiwi. The Kiwi is Ruban Nielson; the brother of Kody Nielson from the band Opossom. UMO is back with their third release; MULTI-LOVE, which is due for release in the States on May 26th. The piece I just spun was the title track.

Next up is something new from a band called Fake Laugh. They are self-described rock music project. They are four guys based in London and these lads have a penchant for Sixties Pop Style music. In fact, they list The Beatles as one of their main influences. They have released this single Kinda Girl with the back side being “Dopey Head.” I ended up choosing Dopey Head.”

Completing that song set was new music from Twin Peaks. Twin Peaks are a Rock Pop quartet out of Chicago. These young guys describe themselves as: “Four doods, gnarly ‘tudes, total hunks, play to drunks;”…and “We like to rock and most certainly love to roll.” They definitely don’t take themselves too seriously. Right now these guys are on tour in Europe. That’s an awesome experience. In honor of that tour they penned the tune had for air…In The Morning (In The Evening).”

Let’s keep things moving with track from another performer I featured back in January but just found another new single. This reprised artist is Andrew Oliver. He’s an Indie Alt. Rock/Pop singer/songwriter out of Oakville, Ontario, Canada. I featured “Bells” on the last show; now I had for my listeners Desert Sun.” Both songs will appear on the upcoming EP…LAZY BONES.

Let me slip in one more from Stonefox. They are a mixed-gendered trio out of Melbourne that plays Indie-Pop/Chill/Folk. The song I played was This City and it has a pretty “Main Stream” Pop kind of feel to it. I normally wouldn’t play something like this; however, I feel this band has potential to be more.

Songs in BOLD are links to videos of that song. Songs that are ITALICIZED are links to Soundcloud Audio Files of said song.

Come listen LIVE on wmfo.org from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. (I could use the support) ;^)

Music You Might Otherwise Miss 2-3-15

This is the second part of the dual New Release Show. Check it out!

I got this hour kicked off with Panic Is Perfect. They are an Indie Rock Alt. quintet based in San Francisco; they are fronted by Jeremy Belzer and Mike Hoffman. I originally found their latest single, Bobby Black,” which I liked very much and I will play it next week. However, when I went digging I found this track, Go Go Go,” and became totally smitten. The song starts with Maddy Tasquin singing the verse melody in an old-timey French music style…then it kicks in full, up-tempo. This song, plus “Bobby Black,” will be featured in their yet to be released EP…BEHIND YOUR EYELIDS.

I followed that song with the latest from the Kaiser Chiefs. This English Rock band from Leeds decided to release this single, Falling Awake.” I believe it is a tease for an upcoming album coming out later this year.

Changing musical direction with River Whyless. They are a mixed-gendered, “baroque folk,” four-piece out of Ashville, North Carolina. I found this new track from them; Life Crisis,” and I was totally taken by the complex layering of the instrumentation and the blending of the male/female vocals. Their new release is a self-titled EP.

Then I aired a tune from Halleluwah. Halleluwah is a male/female duo out of Reykjavik, Iceland. They refer to their music as “Garage Electro Indie Pop,” which I love as a description. That song which I played was Dior.” That tune just hits me in the right way. It feels like my body involuntarily starts moving whenever I hear it.

Next up is an interesting Indie Alt. Rock singer/songwriter out of Los Angeles. Her name is Colleen Green. She is on the Hardly Art record label, which is releasing her new disc, I WANT TO GROW UP, on the 24th of this Month. She has two songs released already with both of them available for free download. So…of those two songs…I had a tough call to make as to which one to play for you here this morning. The choices were TV or Pay Attention.” (I think I’ll have to do a double down with Colleen next week so you can get a side by side comparative) Anyway…so I went with “Pay Attention.

Succeeding that was new music from Mikal Cronin.  Mikal Cronin was part of the California Surf Punk music scene. He cut his teeth with the Orange County, California based band, The Moonhearts. He is stepped out on his own with the release of his solo, debut, self-titled release back in 2011. He still touches on that influence, which you can hear in his latest single, Made My Mind Up,” which is from his new album MCIII. That album has a street date of May 5th.

My lineage feature was I’m From Barcelona. I’m From Barcelona is an interesting collective of singers and musicians; twenty-nine of them, which is way bigger than the Canadian Collective, Broken Social Scene. Anyway, I’m From Barcelona lists Sweden as their home country but the contingent is made up of talent from all over the Continent. Oh, and BTW, their name is from the BBC Television sit-com Fawlty Towers, where the incompetent waiter, Manuel, used the catch phrase “I’m From Barcelona” repeatedly. Anyway…I’ve been following these guys for years and they have a new album coming out…GROWING UP IS FOR TREES and I spun the album’s lead off single. It’s Violins.”

Part two of the feature was made complete by the song Always Spring,” which appears on I’m From Barcelona’s 2011 release FOREVER TODAY.

My re-issue release of the week was from Echo & The Bunnymen. The album that has been re-released their Self-titled effort from 1987. Ian McCulloch is the frontman for this Eighties Alt Rock band out of Liverpool, England. They had a good stretch of albums in the Eighties with plenty of College Station hits. The song I had to share with my listeners was probably their biggest mainstream hit. It’s Lips Like Sugar.”

I closed off that two-song set with the latest effort from Kuroma. Kuroma is a four-piece Alt. Rock band fronted by Hank Sullivant. I did a little digging and found out that Sullivant was a co-founder of the Whigs. He was also a touring member of MGMT and has several producer credits to his name. So Kuroma is his latest creative outlet and their new album, KUROMARAMA, is due out April 7th. That song I had for airplay was Love Is On The Way.”

Keeping the tunes going here is something new from with Breakfast, which I find a curious name for a band. They are an electronica based, mixed-gendered, four piece based in Los Angeles. They have just released this absolutely interesting single called Diane.”

Then came the latest material from Los Angeles Police Department. Los Angeles Police Department is really just Ryan Pollie. Ryan is a multi-instrumentalist and he produces it all by himself too. I was checking out his Twitter feed and I observed that Guster is a fan and has been apparently for a while. That song I sampled for airplay was Insecurity and it’s part of a 7” single…INSECURITY / WATER AND WINE.

Next up is something new from a band called Boo Seeka. They are two guys from Sydney, Australia that play, as they describe as, hip-hop-psych-soul/dream-tronica. I don’t have a great deal of information on this duo other than they have this one song, Kingdom Leader,” and that they are getting a great deal of attention.

Let me slip in one more from Oh Wonder. If you remember, I featured Oh Wonder in January and at that time I announced that Oh Wonder would be releasing a new song every month for a year. Well…this is February’s track. It’s Lose It.”

Songs in BOLD are links to videos of that song. Songs that are ITALICIZED are links to Soundcloud Audio Files of said song.

Come listen LIVE on wmfo.org from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. (I could use the support) ;^)

Music You Might Otherwise Miss 1-27-15

As you may or may not know…last Tuesday’s show was canceled because of the blizzard. So I did two New Release Shows on February 3rd. It was fun but it was a lot of work.   It was worth it though I found some dandies. Let me start with the January 27th intended show.

I began the show started with Moon City Boys. I found this band because I just updated my phone’s SXSW app, which lists some of the bands appearing at this year’s festival. So Moon City Boys are a full female foursome playing some edgy Alt. Pop from Stockholm, Sweden. They have just released a single, “Rocket b/w Stranger.” I really liked both tracks and I ended up selecting Stranger.”

I rounded off the set of the opening hour with the latest from Surf Rock is Dead, which I love that name…for a couple of reasons. First…it’s clever and you won’t have to worry about the name being copyrighted; Second…it’s ironic. Surf Rock is Dead plays some awesome Surf Rock. So…anyway…Surf Rock is Dead are essentially Kevin Pariso and Joel Witenberg; they are from Chicago and Melbourne but now live in New York. I played their debut single, Equinox about three weeks ago. Anyway…I’m hoping an EP or a full-length album is on the way for 2015. I just reached out to the boys to get a sense of their plan. I’ll keep you informed. The new track I had for airplay was Late Risers.

Changing musical direction with Valise. Not the small traveling bag or suitcase; rather the Neo-Folk foursome out of Dallas, Texas. They have an album set for release on February 24th. The title is YOUNG BLOOMER and the lead off single, Dialogue,” is already available for purchase. I just read too that Valise opened for Vacationer in Dallas last week. That is an excellent musical pairing.

Then I played a tune from Darren Hanlon. Darren Hanlon is a singer/songwriter from Gympie, Queensland, Australia, which is just north of Brisbane. Hanlon is known for his “urban folk” musings. Over the years he’s released three EPs and six albums with the latest being WHERE DID YOU COME FROM, which is set for release for March 2nd. The song I sampled was When You Go.”

Next up is an interesting Indie Alt. Rock/Pop singer/songwriter out of Oakville, Ontario, Canada. His name is Andrew Oliver and he is readying to release an EP entitled LAZY BONES. Oliver does a very interesting blending of acoustic guitar with synthesizers. The track I had for air was Bells.” BTW, I will have the second single from the new EP for you on next week’s show.

I followed that up with new music from Alex Winston. I have been following Alex Winston since 2011…when she didn’t even have a record contract. This extremely talented, multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter has been chipping away at her craft since 2007. On the strength of her self-released, self-titled album…she was able to parlay that into a record deal. They remixed and repackaged the same material. The new album’s name was KING CON. Alex must have something in the works and this latest effort, We Got Nothing,” might be just a tease for a new album.

My lineage subject was Vetiver. Now Vetiver, not to be confused with the grasses native to India but the Neo-Folk band who now calls San Francisco their home. Andy Cabic is the driving force behind this rotating collective of musicians that sometimes includes a cello and a violin. Under the moniker of Vetiver, Andy has released six albums with the latest being COMPLETE STRANGERS, which has a street date of March 24th. The song I had to start this feature was the designated single…this is Current Carry.”

Part two was made complete with Vetiver’s tune More Of This,” which was released back in 2009 on their TIGHT KNIT album.

M re-issue release of the week was from Wilco. The album that has been re-released is the album; A.M. Wilco was formed after the demise of the band Uncle Tupelo. (Jay Farrar left Uncle Tupelo and Jeff Tweedy then started Wilco) The band’s personnel make up changed from album to album with only Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt as the constants. On this album, A.M., Wilco hits their stride with the quintessential Alternative Country Rock. The song I selected was I Must Be High.”

I closed off that two-song set with the latest effort from Diet Cig. Diet Cig is comprised of the duo Alex Luciano and Noah Bowman. I first featured them three weeks ago with the first single off their yet to be released debut EP…OVER EASY. The track I spun was Harvard and it is the second single. There are only three more songs available before the official release date of February 24th. I like these guys…a lot!

Keeping the tunes going here is something new from with Grrl Pal. They are an Indie Pop duo from Perth, Australia. The song I have for the show was Amazon and it’s actually close to two years old; however, Grrl Pal just got this song featured on a brand new compilation disc entitled NEW MOONS: VOL III. So I am counting it as new…and besides…it’s a really nice tune.

Then came the latest material from Royal Tongues. Royal Tongues are Aaron Bonus and Justin Gammella. This duo from Buffalo, New York plays some fine Indie Alternative Rock and the sample I played from them, Rollin’ On,” is a brand new single.

Next up is something new from a band called Two Cartoons. They are another duo but they hail from London. I found them a little over a week ago and when I went to do research for this broadcast I often visit the band’s Facebook and SoundCloud page. So when I went to Two Cartoons Soundcloud page I discovered they have just released another single. So…I will include that in next week’s program. In the meantime…this is their first single…this is Horizon Approaching.”

Let me slip in one more from an Indie Alt. Pop/Rock band out of New York City. They are Caverns. This five piece will be releasing their debut EP later this year. In the meantime, the boys have released this single. It’s called Ghosts.”

Songs in BOLD are links to videos of that song. Songs that are ITALICIZED are links to Soundcloud Audio Files of said song.
