Music You Might Otherwise Miss 11-18-14

With the Thanksgiving Holiday right around the corner I am noticing more Holiday music offerings are pushing aside the new material. However, I continue to push through to find you the best new tunes. Let me tell you about the songs I found for this week’s show.

I kicked the program off with something new from Walla. Walla is an Electronic/Pop quintet that found a home in Los Angeles. All the components of the band arrived in Southern California in 2009 hoping to break their way into the music business. The boys are from all over the place…geographically wise. They come from such mundane places as Ohio; as well as exotic places like Italy, Indonesia and Brazil. (Two of the band members also went to The Berklee College of Music here in Boston, which also happens to be were I received a Masters Degree…yeah, baby!) They released their first EP in 2012 but the tune I have for the show today has just been released; purely as a single. It’s called The Kids Are Alright and it’s already getting some good press and it’s not even officially released yet.

I completed the opening song set with a band called The Kickdrums. They are from New York and Ohio and that’s about all I know about them. I did notice that they have been quite busy since I found them in 2009. In March of this year they released their third full-length album in five years; with a couple singles released as well over that time with the latest being this one…Breathe Again.”

Changing musical direction with an artist known as The Outdoor Type. He, and it is just one…un-named individual that chooses to be known as The Outdoor Type. He’s kind of cagey when it comes to personal information. I lifted this from his Facebook page, “Melbourne songwriter The Outdoor Type writes of modern Australian suburban life. Sonically, a blend of alt-country guitars and analogue synth drones, his music is reminiscent of home-grown artists from the late 80’s.” I actually like and agree with that description…and, more importantly, I like the song. It’s called Are You Happy and it’s been released as a single.

I followed that tune with the latest from Flamingo. Flamingo is a really new Electronica based, mixed-gendered trio from Adelaide, Australia. This threesome has only been crafting music now for a little over a year and in that time their big break came when a radio station selected them to represent the best of the unsigned artists on the Main Stage of a Music Festival the station was sponsoring. It’s just been getting better for them ever since. The song I had for airplay, Drip Away,” and it is the title track to their new upcoming EP, which should be out by the end of the year.

Next up is a track from a band called Lisbon. They are an up-and-coming quartet out of the UK that has an amazing Indie Pop sound and energy. I first featured them this year in January with the song Blue Love.” This song that I have for you this morning, Native,” is their third single of 2014 with an EP, LIFE IS GOOD, scheduled to be released next year, which I’m sure will have all the previously released singles on it.

I followed Lisbon up with a track from a band called Oh Land, which is really Danish born singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Nanna Øland Fabricius. She has come on quite strong since her move to the States. She has a great stage presence; where her shows feature costumes, dance routines and a strange musical contraption. She seems destined for Pop Music Stardom. She has all the qualities. She can write and sing; she’s really attractive and she’s entertainment savvy. That new track is Nothing Is Over and it’s from the just released album…EARTH SICK.

My lineage subject was Jordan Klassen. This young singer/songwriter from Vancouver, British Columbia; Jordan describes his style as “Fairy-Folk.” I found him about a year ago with the release of the album, REPENTANCE. I got to see, and talk to him, at this year’s SXSW. He has a lush and layered style, which I really like. The new tune is Firing Squad it is out today.

Part two of the lineage was satisfied with Balcony,” which can be found on his album, REPENTANCE; which was released in October of 2013.

My re-issue release of the week was from Iggy Pop and the album that has been re-released was BRICK BY BRICK. BRICK BY BRICK originally came out in 1990 and for me…the stand out track of this album was the song Candy,” which was a duet with Kate Pierson of the B-52’s…and that’s the song I picked for my listeners.

I closied off that two-song set with the new single from The Bandicoots. This four-piece, straightforward rock band out of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada is one those bands that reached out to me directly. I still get such a kick out of that. They sent to me a note of introduction and a link to their “bandcamp” page to check out their music. They have just released this single, Just After Dark,” which I believe will be on the upcoming album…THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS.

Keeping the tunes going here with delightfully Indie Pop tune from Sydney, Australia based singer…Laura Skye. This song has the feel to it like it’s right out of the Sixties. She has just signed with The A&R Department and together they have released My Love,” which officially drops on December the 5th.

I then featured the latest from The Popguns. This marks the return of famous British band that released their first single, “Landslide,” all the way back in 1989. They putting the final touches on their latest album, POP FICTION, which is the first release from them in eighteen years and it’s set for release on December 2nd. I played the first single, Lovejunky in the beginning of October. This yet-to-be released song is City Lights.”

Moving things forward here with something very new from Pepa Knight. He’s a singer/songwriter from New South Wales in Australia. In his Facebook description Pepa writes, “Over the last few years I have been writing and recording an album based on my travels to India. I recorded samples with the help of local musicians I met there and spent time learning from them.” And you can here that influence in the pre-release single, Coyote Choir,” which will be included in the upcoming EP, HYPNOTIZED VOL. 1, which drops November 28th.

Let me slip in one more from The Maytags, They are a six-piece, Rock and Roll band with a heavy Soul influence and they are from Des Moines, Iowa. The band is fronted by Dustin Smith who studied and played Jazz in New York. While in New York, Smith became enamored with Soul and started penning his music in that direction. They have self-released their new EP, NOVA, which comes out on December 2nd. And they will be on tour in the Spring of 2015. (Hopefully they will stop in Austin for next year’s SXSW) These guys are wonderful. The song I have to share is Cassius.”

Songs in BOLD are links to videos of that song. Songs that are ITALICIZED are links to Soundcloud Audio Files of said song.

Music You Might Otherwise Miss 11-11-14

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and it’s already getting harder to find good new material. Quite a few of the tracks this week are pre-release singles in anticipation of the full album’s release come January or February. Quite a few of the songs for this week’s show are from New Zealand where they do not celebrate Thanksgiving so the pickings were a little better. Let me tell you about what I featured for this past Tuesday’s show.

I got the program started with something new from Hey Anna. For those who might be new to the show Hey Anna is fronted by three sisters; Erin, Anna and Katie Rauch-Sasseen; and supported by Andrew Smolin and Matthew Langner. As a group they offer a wonderful blend of Pop and Neo-Folk. I found them almost two years ago and we’ve become friends. Earlier this year Hey Anna got a chance to do some touring in Japan and they’ve released a Japan Only Deluxe version of their DANCE UNTIL THREE – EP. This tune, Anaphase was just added in anticipation of their Asian tour, which just started.

Right after Hey Anna I played something from a band called The Night VI. This international, mixed-gendered sextet currently based in London are getting ready to release their latest effort, which is a self-released EP entitled D.I.Y. (For “do it yourself” of course) The song I just aired was Wonderlust was released earlier this year and is included in the special edition EP. The deal is that Night VI is only making 500 of these EPs and that they will only be selling them at their shows. The EP will contain one new song; two songs that were released earlier this year and two demos. I’m really excited for them. I think they are extremely talented.

Changing musical direction with a singer/songwriter by the name of Travis Bretzer. He’s a 24-year-old, Indie Pop singer/songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It’s the old story…teenager has lousy job; urge to play Rock and Roll; and buys himself a guitar and learns how to play. He has released one EP and three singles; with the latest being Promises,” which will be included in his upcoming release…WAXING ROMANTIC.

I completed that set with the latest from Future Of What. They are a mixed-gendered, quartet based in Brooklyn, NY. They just formed in 2012 and are fronted by the single-named singer, Blair. They self-released an EP, MOONSTRUCK, in March of this 2012. Well…after two years in the making they are back with their debut, full-length album entitled PRO DREAMS, which will officially come out in January of 2015. Back in October; I featured the yet-to-be released album’s first single, No War Dance Floor.” Well as luck would have it…I was able to get my hands on another track from the upcoming album. That one was Party In Heaven.” I am looking forward to checking out the rest of the CD when it gets released.

Next up is a track from Big Little Lions. I originally found them because of a singer/songwriter I follow…Paul Otten. Paul posted about Big Little Lions and I immediately went to their website and was rewarded with some outstanding Neo-Folk. I then tweeted about the band with that Neo-Folk comment, which the band responded back to me that they like that descriptive. Big Little Lions, which I discovered are Paul Otten (surprise!) and Helen Austin. These two artists are fine singer/songwriters in their own right but together…they are amazing. Back in May this pair released a nifty little song, Make It Up As We Go Along,” to much success and it encourage the duo to get back into the studio and create more magic. The result is the yet-to-be released EP; THE TIME IS NOW. The song I had for airplay was the title track.

I closed off that two-song set with a track from a band called Why We Love. They are an Indie Alt. Pop band from Bristol; in the U.K. I found them because of another UK band I follow and introduced to you…The Adelines. (Sadly…the Adelines are no more) :^( That tune was All Good Things Must Drown and it’s from their upcoming EP – FAKE A DEATH. It’s a shame but their music is not available on US i-Tunes.

My lineage subject was Misun. If you listen to my show with any frequency you probably already know Misun. For you newbies Misun (Me-sun) started as a mixed-gendered trio, from Washington, DC and fronted by Misun Wojcik. They have since added another member to the band and moved to Los Angeles. (Both moves, I believe, is a good idea) The force behind Misun is, of course, Misun herself, however, she works closely with her buddy and bandmate, Nacey. Nacey produces all of the band’s material. They make a great team and, as I wrote back then…”I just think they are destined for bigger things.” Well…it’s coming to fruition. Misun has just signed a record deal with Aquawave Records and they are releasing today…their debut, full-length album SUPERSTITIONS. The band was smart enough to include some of their older tracks along side new material. The song I picked this feature was one of the newer ones. It’s Penny.”

Part two of the lineage was fulfilled by Harlot,” which can be found on their new album, SUPERSTITIONS; but it was originally released as a single back in early 2103. I love it…they are one of my success stories.

My re-issue release of the week was from The Buckinghams. They were a short-lived but very popular “sunshine Pop” band out of Chicago. Their Pop Peak was 1966 to 1968…basically. They have reformed and are out on the geriatric circuit. The album that’s been re-released is a compilation DVD/CD set. The box set is a collection of live footage of concerts with all their big hits like Kind Of A Drag,” Mercy, Mercy, Mercy and the one I spun…Don’t You Care.

Right behind The Buckinghams was the new single from French For Rabbits, which is an awesome name for a band. French For Rabbits is a four-piece, mixed-gendered, Dream Pop band out of Wellington, New Zealand. They have just released their debut, full-length album, SPIRITS, on October 27th. The tune I had for my listeners was, Gone Gone Gone,” and it’s my favorite track on the CD.

Keeping the tunes going here with another band from New Zealand. Originally from Dunedin but now make their base of operations in Auckland…they are Ha the Unclear, which is a strange name but I am sure no one else will have it. They are a nifty Indie- Pop quartet that have just released their debut, full-length album entitled BACTERIUM, LOOK AT YOUR MOTOR GO…these boys are strange. The track I have to share with you is dynamite. It’s called Growing Mould.” Did I mention, “These guys are weird?”

Then came the latest from The Dodos. This San Francisco based Indie Folk Pop band is back with their sixth album in eight years…not bad. The new album, INDIVID, is set for release in January of 2015. The song I sampled is the pre-release single and it’s called Competition.” There’s a little more energy on this release than I’ve heard from them on previous albums. It’s nice to hear.

Keeping the momentum going here with something very new from a band called The Districts. They are four guys from a little town in Pennsylvania, called Lititz, which is just north of Lancaster. They have since relocated to the Philly area to pursue their craft. They have just signed a deal with Fat Possum Records to release their debut, full-length album, A FLOURISH AND A SPOIL, which has a street date in February of next year. They have pre-released this single, 4th And Roebling,” to create some interest in the band.

Let me slip in one more from The Map Room. They are another band from New Zealand that I found over the weekend. They originally released their self-titled album in 2013 but got picked up for distribution here in the States and this song got my attention and I thought I’d share it with you. It’s Pilot.”

Songs in BOLD are links to videos of that song. Songs that are ITALICIZED are links to Soundcloud Audio Files of said song.

Music You Might Otherwise Miss 11-4-14

It’s amazing but as soon as Halloween is over…everything…and I mean everything turns towards the Holiday Season. New music starts to thin as boxed sets and seasonal compilations start taking up shelf space, literally and digitally. So let me tell you about what I found for my radio show this week.

I got things kicked off with a tune from Deers. Deers is a throwback, lo-fi, Indie pop band out of Madrid, Spain; fronted by Ana Garcia Perrote and Carlotta Cosials. So the story goes is that the two gals that started the band met through ex-boyfriends. And forming the band ended being the best way to get back at the guys that dumped them and it was also great therapy. They uploaded a couple of tracks on SoundCloud, which got them some attention. They realized that they may have something and they’ve added to more players to ramp up this female foursome. The song I picked for airplay is the newest effort from Deers; it’s called Between Cans.”

Completing that two-song set of the opening hour of the New Release Show was the latest from Rolls Bayce. Rolls Bayce is a band made up of the remnants of Hungry Kids of Hungary. The Hungry Kids broke up earlier this year and they are all still in music but it seems they are moving off in different directions. Rolls Bayce seems to have a harder edge than Hungry Kids but I can still hear that Pop sensibility. The tune I featured was On My Own.” It’s the second single released this year. In July I spun Don’t Get Me Wrong.” I am sure we will see a full-length album from them in 2015.

Changing musical direction with a single named artist…Liv. This young and talented artist/producer is only twenty years old but it feels like she has an old soul. She released her first song, Come A Little Closer,” earlier this year, which has more of a Soul feel to it; like Erykah Badu did it. The song I have for you this morning is called Special.” It’s kind of an R&B tune with a Bossa nova sensibility to it. I am sure we are going to be hearing more from this artist in 2015…probably a full-length album. This song has been released as a stand-alone single.

Then I picked to play a tune from Sleepy Tea. Sleepy Tea is a newly formed, ethereal sounding, five-piece born in Brisbane, Australia. They released their first single, Hold On To Your Breath,” earlier this year to much success, which led to the release of their debut EP entitled SPECKS. The official release date is tomorrow and I picked a deeper cut to share with my audience, which was Silver Birds.”

Next up is a track from Saint Raymond. This is his third song I’ve featured here on the New Release show since May; obviously…I like his music. Saint Raymond’s given name is Callum Burrows and he’s a singer/songwriter from Nottingham, England. This guy is a go-getter. He wrote and self-produced his debut EP, ESCAPADE, in 2013 when he had just turned eighteen. On the strength of that release, Saint Raymond, got signed by Warner Records in the UK. Then before he turned nineteen, he released his second EP, YOUNG BLOOD. Earlier this year, Saint Raymond released a four-song EP entitled GHOSTS, which I featured. Well…he’s back with his second single since his last EP and it’s called Fall At Your Feet;” it’s my favorite of his so far. I don’t have the release date on this tune yet.

I followed up Saint Raymond with new music from Belle & Sebastian. Belle & Sebastian, the Indie Pop collective from Glasgow, Scotland are back with their ninth studio album in eighteen years. Wow…eighteen years. THAT…is a successful career. The new disc, GIRLS IN PEACETIME WANT TO DANCE, officially drops on January 20th of 2015. The track I played, The Party Line,” is the album’s pre-release single.

My lineage subject was The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. They are a terrific indie-pop quartet out of New York. I can’t say it’s the best name for a band I’ve ever heard but they put out a really nice sound. They were founded in 2007. I first discovered them in 2009 with the release of their second EP, HIGHER THAN THE STARS. Since that time the band has released a great number of singles but only two more full-length albums, with the latest being DAYS OF ABANDON. The song I used to kick off this feature was Poison Touch,” which can only be found on the “Deluxe” version of the new disc.

Part two of the lineage was fulfilled by Falling Over,” which can be found on their 2009 EP; HIGHER THAN THE STARS.

My re-issue release of the week was from XTC…and the album that’s been re-issued is DRUMS AND WIRE. I was a big fan of XTC back in the day. I was a little late to discover them, however, I remember exactly when it was when I did. It was in February of 1982; I was in Sarasota, Florida on Spring Break and it was in the early MTV days; when they used to play music videos. I heard (and saw), for the first time, Senses Working Overtime.” I was smitten and I went looking into their discography to discover more music from them, which lead me to this album DRUMS AND WIRE. It had tracks on it like Life Begins At The Hop,” Ten Feet Tall and, this one, Making Plans For Nigel.”

Next came the new single from Spelles. Her given name is Kathryn Baar and I have just discovered her last week with the release of this single, Bird In A Cage. And…Wow! She put out a great song? That tune has kind of a Lykke Li kind of feel to it with the driving beat but it has such a wonderful Pop sensibility to it that I can see this track having mainstream appeal. So far, this is the only available recorded material I’ve been able to find from Spelles. Good stuff. BTW…it just came out today.

Keeping the tunes going here with a band known as Virginia Wing. They are an experimental/avant-garde, mixed-gendered trio based in South London. To be honest…I didn’t really “Get” most of the material on the band’s newest release, MEASURES OF JOY. However, I think they are terrifically talented and the one tune that got the attention of my Pop Sensibility Radar was track number three, World Contact.

Then came the latest Dream Pop styling from American Wolf. American Wolf is classically structured rock quintet and they are out of Chicago, Illinois. They have just released their third album in three years. This one is MY MAIN SPORT, it came out in September and I sampled Evil Eyed.”

Let me slip in one more from Thumpers. They are the duo of John Hamson, Jr. and Marcu Pepperell. They are childhood friends and have known each other since the age of eleven. This bond has developed into a remarkable collaboration that has produces three EPs and one full-length album. The song I had to spin was Devotee and it features Jena Malone helping out on vocals. It’s been released as a single but it will be included in their yet-to-be released EP, TOGETHER, which I’m expecting a 2015 release time.

Songs in BOLD are links to videos of that song. Songs that are ITALICIZED are links to Soundcloud Audio Files of said song.

Come listen LIVE on wmfo.org from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. (I could use the support) ;^)
